Navajo Name: Naayizi (Squash/Pumpkin)

Nageezi Chapter

The community of Nageezi has been in existence since the early 1800's. The name Nageezi was given to the area's Post Office in 1953. The name comes from an elderly lady who harvested pumpkins and squash every year. She was known as the "Pumpkin Lady". The Navajo word “Naayizi” means squash or pumpkin.

Nageezi Chapter is located along U.S. Highway 550, 25 miles east of Chaco Canyon and 36 miles south of Bloomfield, New Mexico.

The Nageezi Chapter conducts monthly meetings to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning their chapter.
